Bow axle-to-axle: short vs long
Axle-to-axle length (ATA) is the distance between the two cam axles. Modern hunt compounds sit between 28 in and 34 in ATA. Short bows carry easier in a treestand and thick timber; long bows forgive form errors better and hold steadier at distance.
Scenarios with real numbers
Treestand whitetail, tight cover
28-31 in ATA is the sweet spot. Mathews Lift X 29.5 and Hoyt RX-9 Ultra at 28.5 in tuck against a tree without limb slap. Downside: string angle at full draw is sharper, less forgiving on peep alignment.
Western spot-and-stalk mule deer
32-34 in ATA. Elite Envision at 33 in and PSE EVO EVL 34 hold steadier on the pin at 60 yards. Longer riser reduces torque from off-hand grip pressure.
Elk, mixed timber and clearings
30-32 in ATA is the middle ground. Hoyt Ventum Pro 30 and Bowtech SR350 at 30 in tuck through blowdowns but still hold a pin cleanly at 50 yards.
Ground blind
28 in or shorter. Full-draw clearance in a Primos Double Bull is 32 in horizontal, so a 34 in ATA bow gets its top cam into the ceiling on a kneeling shot. Diamond Infinite Edge Pro at 31 in still works with a low chair.
What ATA does not fix
A short bow does not shoot faster than a long bow if IBO is equal. Speed comes from cam profile and brace height, not ATA. ATA is entirely a handling metric.
What bowhunters are saying
Ran a 34 in Elite for three years out west, then swapped to a 30 in Hoyt for a treestand-heavy Iowa season. My groups tightened out west; the Hoyt is faster to point in the stand. There is no one-bow answer.
