G5 Montec Review

G5 Montec review

The G5 Montec is the one-piece three-blade fixed broadhead the hunting industry has been shipping since 2004 in the same design. MIM-forged stainless, single-piece from tip to ferrule, 100 gr, 1 in cut, three blades set 120 degrees apart. Field-sharpen with a diamond file, no replaceable blades to buy. The most-shot fixed head in North America.

Build and geometry

Metal Injection Molded (MIM) 420 stainless. One-piece: tip, ferrule, and blades are all one casting. Blades are sharpened after forging on a CNC. 1 in cut diameter, 1.5 in overall length, 100 gr. 125 gr version available. G5 also ships a CS (Carbon Steel) version at a lower price.

Flight and tuning

Three-blade one-piece design forgives a lot of tune. Flies close to a field point on any correctly-spined arrow at any draw weight over 50 lb. Broadhead-tune to inside a group at 40 yd inside 20 minutes on a paper-tuned rig. The Montec is the most-shot broadhead in bowhunting because the flight-tune margin is the widest.

Best for

Best for: beginning bowhunters wanting a proven, cheap, indestructible three-blade fixed for whitetail and mule deer.

Shortcomings

Cast MIM stainless does not hold an edge as long as a laminated blade. Field-sharpen after every 2 to 3 shots. 1 in cut is on the small side (Grim Reaper Micro Hades and Slick Trick Standard match it, most heads exceed it). Not ideal for elk or bear.
