Georgia Bowhunt Broadhead Rules

Georgia bowhunt broadhead rules

Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Wildlife Resources Division regulates archery equipment for deer, bear, and turkey hunts. Georgia sets a minimum broadhead cut width of 7/8 in and a two-cutting-edge minimum, published each year in the Georgia Hunting Seasons and Regulations Guide.

The rule

Georgia Code and the current Hunting Seasons and Regulations Guide (Wildlife Resources Division) specify: broadheads must be at least 7/8 in in width, must have at least two cutting edges, and blades must be sharpened. Both fixed and mechanical broadheads are legal in Georgia. Bows must have a minimum draw weight of 40 lb for deer and bear.

Blade count and minimum cut

Two cutting edges minimum. 7/8 in minimum cut width. Sharpened at hunt time.

Species restrictions

The 7/8 in and two-edge rule applies to deer and bear archery hunts. Turkey has its own rule set: broadheads and other legal archery equipment are permitted, and the 7/8 in rule applies. Feral hog seasons are open year-round on private land in most counties, with archery legal.

What this means in practice

Nearly every commercial broadhead over 7/8 in is legal. Rage 2 in, SEVR 2.0, Slick Trick Magnum 1-1/8 in, G5 Montec 1-1/8 in, Iron Will S100 1-1/16 in, QAD Exodus 1-1/4 in, and Cutthroat 1-1/4 in all clear the width rule. Compact sub-7/8 in specialty heads are out. Georgia archery seasons are among the longest in the Southeast.
