Standard-Diameter Arrows (.246)

Standard-Diameter Arrows (.246 Inside Diameter)

The .246 inside diameter shaft is the default hunting arrow. Every mainstream component fits. Nocks, inserts, half-outs, string loops, and rests are all built around this dimension. If you are new to bowhunting or you build your own arrows once a season, this is where to stay.

Why standard is still the safe choice

Component availability. Every archery shop in the country stocks .246 nocks, aluminum inserts, and broadheads with standard threads. You will never be stuck on a hunt because your local pro shop only has micro parts and you shoot standard. Repairing an arrow on day 4 of a backcountry trip is a fifteen minute job with .246, and an hour job with proprietary micro parts.

Three shafts worth a hard look

ShaftSpine (340)GPIStraightness
Gold Tip Hunter XT3409.3+/- .003
Easton 5mm Axis3409.5+/- .003
Carbon Express Maxima Sable RZ3509.1+/- .0025

The Hunter XT is the workhorse. The Axis 5mm is the reference for straight-shooting mid-priced carbon. The Maxima Sable RZ is the pick for spot-and-stalk hunters because of the RZ camo finish that kills glare on rifle rests and stand blinds.

What standard gives up

Wind drift at long range and the last 10 fps of speed. If your shots are inside 40 yards, neither matters. If you regularly stretch to 60 yards on elk or antelope, look at micro. If you shoot inside 30 yards from a treestand, standard is more than enough.
