Bowhunting pronghorn
Pronghorn are the fastest land animal in North America and the smallest big game most bowhunters chase. A buck runs 100 to 130 lb, with eyesight better than 8x binoculars. The typical bow shot is either 20 yd from a waterhole blind or 30 to 60 yd on a decoy setup. Kinetic energy is not the constraint; range judgement and wind reading are.
Kinetic energy threshold
Pope and Young 40 ft-lb is more than enough for pronghorn-sized game. A 55 lb draw with a 420 gr arrow at 265 fps hits 65 ft-lb at the bow, 45 to 50 ft-lb at 40 yd. Prairie wind does more to your arrow than any spec sheet.
Broadhead recommendation
Mid-cut mechanicals shine on pronghorn because open-country shots are usually broadside on decoyed bucks. Rage Hypodermic 2 in, SEVR 2.0, and Grim Reaper mechanicals leave the biggest blood trail on a marginal broadside. Fixed heads (Slick Trick Magnum, G5 Montec) work for waterhole blind shots under 25 yd.
Shot placement
Pronghorn vitals sit further back than a deer’s. Broadside: aim in the crease behind the shoulder, 1/3 up from bottom of chest, but a touch further back than a whitetail’s aim point. Quartering-away preferred. Long-range prep: practice 40 to 60 yd shots off a bipod, from a kneeling position, and with a 15 mph crosswind. Range judgement error is the number one miss cause.
Arrow build
400 to 460 gr total, 12 to 15% FOC. Easton Axis 5mm 340 with 100 gr broadhead builds around 420 gr at 12% FOC. Gold Tip Hunter XT and Victory RIP TKO are the pronghorn arrows most-referenced on Rokslide’s Western Big Game section. Micro-diameter is helpful at long range for wind drift.
What bowhunters actually say
Antelope hunts come down to the decoy and the range finder. A 40 yard shot in a 12 mph crosswind means dial down, hold left, and trust the arrow.
